Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on undesired presents can be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 gifts given to her by world leaders during her travels. The eclectic collection could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the proceeds going to non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Collection
The items are currently kept in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been stored away for years.
The detailed catalog remains disclosed, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Political Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with building relationships with global statesmen and positioning Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.
This charitable initiative highlights a distinct method to handle the state presents that are collected during a leader's tenure.
