Followers Call for Custody of Person Who Seized Ariana Grande
Loyal fans of the pop star are demanding that a man who leaped a fence and seized the performer during yesterday's Wicked: For Good debut be arrested or expelled from Singapore.
A viral video shows the Australian man shoving aside camera operators and lunging at Grande while the cast made its way down a yellow carpet flanked by fans.
Co-star Cynthia Erivo quickly wrested the shocked performer away from Mr Wen, who was observed being led away of the gathering by event staff.
Mr Wen shared on Instagram Thursday evening that he was "let go after being arrested", though court documents showed that he was due to attend court on Friday morning. It is not clear if he was faced legal action.
Record of Event Invasions
This is not an isolated incident for Mr Wen, who describes himself as a "Controversial Figure", has crashed a performance. His Instagram profile contains recordings of him disrupting other celebrity events, including rushing the platform at the pop singer's Sydney show in June this year and in a similar way during The Chainsmokers performance in the city last year.
"Steps should be implemented applied against him as this is evidently a punishable act," stated an Instagram user, in a message to a video Mr Wen uploaded of his behavior.
"You've done this repeatedly... how are you not behind bars?" a different Instagram user questioned.
Followers Express Concern Over Ariana's Safety
Numerous followers blamed Mr Wen for "triggering past anxiety" Grande, who had revealed dealing with trauma-related anxiety after a devastating incident at the end of her 2017 performance in Manchester, claiming the lives of 22 people and harming hundreds.
"Ariana has been through so many scary things... and at her Manchester concert and you thought it would be fun to jump the barricade?" said another message on Instagram.
Several attendees also faulted event staff at the Thursday event for not being vigilant enough; while others demanded social media platforms to remove Mr Wen's uploads.
Response and Event Details
In clips shared widely, Grande looked surprised when she was approached by the individual. Her fellow actors Michelle Yeoh and Erivo can be observed consoling her while Mr Wen was removed by staff.
Grande has remained silent on the incident, and the rest of the event continued without further issues.
Hundreds of fans had assembled in a sea of green and pink at the Wicked: For Good regional launch in a Singapore mall, including several who had waited for as long as eight hours before it began.
The film, to be released on 21 November, is the second of a dual adaptation of the popular Broadway and West End show Wicked, which revolves around the surprising friendship between two distinct witches.
The production itself is a spin-off of the 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Grande, who portrays the character Glinda Glinda, was decked out in a light pink glittering gown at the gathering while Erivo, who plays the Elphaba, wore a sleek black dress featuring roses.
They were accompanied by cast member Jeff Goldblum.
The previous installment, Wicked, was the most successful film of the previous year in the UK, and scored a dozen Academy Award nods, winning two for best costume and set decoration.
