Hardline Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.
In a decisive final ballot, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Triumph
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely built on promises to address increasing crime and significantly reduce immigration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the race, he delivered an stern warning for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face deportation.
His proposals included Trump-inspired measures such as constructing detention centers, barriers, electric fences, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Part of a Regional Wave
Numerous analysts view Kast's success as aligning with a wider rightward trend in South America, similar to recent political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts also frame it as a part of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Strong Majority
Despite his clear popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to have an absolute majority in Congress, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are counted together.
This legislative landscape could challenge his policy goals, including a promise to slash public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not detailed specifics.
"We have numerous aspects about how a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not detailed the way he will achieve them," said a political science professor.
The analyst continued, "On economic policy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies common for the right-wing. But where there is far less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
