Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Remarks
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments following Denver's historic 33-32 victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback was traded to the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
