A popular South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but fell down across the street.

Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the assault.

"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to find their location," added an official.
