The Reds Will Not Alter Offensive Approach Despite Poor Run of Form, Says Slot
Arne Slot has revealed that the club's hierarchy share his views regarding the recent downturn and he refuses to compromise their offensive approach in quest for a turnaround. The tactician conceded that six unsuccessful results in seven outings was below standard ahead of Saturday's match against Aston Villa.
Growing Expectations Throughout Difficult Period
The manager acknowledged the expectations were high before his rotated squad exited the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace. However, he maintained that this need to reverse the decline is not coming from the Anfield hierarchy or football administration following a summer transfer outlay of almost £450m.
"We share common perspectives," remarked the manager, whose squad will encounter the Spanish giants in the Champions League and visit Pep Guardiola's side in the Premier League.
Player Depth Stays Unchallenged
Slot believes his team "possess an exceptional group if they are all fit and fully prepared for the fixture list". He mentioned that the transfer window acquisitions in players such as the attacking midfielder and Alexander Isak, who is likely to miss out again against the Birmingham club through physical problems, had left the club "in an excellent position for the short-term future and the years to come".
Team Cohesion Issues
When asked why his team were taking so long to gel, he responded: "You don't really help me. 'What's causing this?' I provide reasons and people say I'm coming up with excuses. I can identify several explanations why we are not winning as much or losing as much as we do but, as I consistently state, there are inadequate reasons to have a performance streak as we had now."
- Regardless of whether I could list numerous reasons
- As Liverpool manager you should not suffer defeats
- Unfortunately six defeats in seven games
Backline Performance
Only the Lancashire club (twenty-one) have conceded more clear opportunities from normal situations this season than Slot's team (19). The league leaders, the Gunners, have faced two. Yet Slot denies the champions have been too open and maintains there is no reason to sacrifice his attacking principles for a defensive approach after 10 games without a clean sheet.
"In my view we're not giving up numerous openings so I don't see a reason to change our playing style entirely but we must improve in keeping clean sheets," he declared.
Recent Examples
"When facing United, how many openings did we give up? Against Eintracht Frankfurt when we were ahead by two goals, we scarcely gave up a effort at our net. In each fixture we played until now we haven't conceded a lot of chances. Definitely not. We do give away a somewhat more than last season but that stems from us being behind early so you take a bit more risk. But in general I don't think that our challenge is that we give up too many openings. Our issue is we are unable to finish the chances we create."
