Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.
Historic Return to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
