What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Vecna. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Cavern
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is known about his research, the case most likely held samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the children Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the container could have held exotic matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the shadow monster in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
Henry's enduring terror of that cave shows how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to fortify himself.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
